Biography

SCREAM was formed in 2004 for ex Defence musicians to get together socially and play some good music for their own enjoyment. The name SCREAM is derived from “Sunshine Coast Retired and Ex Armed forces Musicians”.

Having served in the various arms of the Defence Force, highly trained ex-members of Military bands found themselves playing in civilian bands. It became quickly apparent that the camaraderie and dedication that these ex-serving members were used to was lacking, and as a result SCREAM was born and with it a level of professionalism was achieved which is unique to Military bands the world over.

After a few years having 'a blow' together once a month it was decided to start getting our music out to the public. With the core of the band being retired or current professional musicians, the standard of the music is quite high, and it seemed a shame to keep it under wraps. The band retains its strong ex services focus, with membership drawn from current and past service personnel, both regular and reserve. A few of the members are not ex services, however there remains a strong link with the services, for example the father of our Musical Director, Charlie Simm served in the Navy and Air Force as a musician. We are the only civilian Big Band in Australia that has this strong ex-service focus.

We are a traditional format 17 piece Big Band with a number of vocalists that perform with us. We also have access to guest artists such as the Eastside Belles - a female vocal trio from Brisbane that do an excellent Andrews Sisters show. We do a variety of swing era and jazz music as well as more contemporary numbers.

We have performed at a number of venues around the Sunshine Coast, always to highly
appreciative audiences. We have also combined with Jacki Cooper and John Morrison for a show, as well as regular appearances at the Noosa Jazz Festival with artists such as Liam Burrows and Bobby Valentine.

We are available for private functions, balls, weddings, jazz festivals etc, as well as performing at public venue
